A better diet can help you have a better smile. March is National Nutrition Month, which seems like a great time to remind you of this. Cutting back on sugar is a dietary change that benefits your oral health – and your overall health too.
Sweet treats like cookies and soda are obviously packed with sugar. But others may surprise you. This eye-opening video compares breakfast foods from the grocery and restaurants to a glazed doughnut. Shockingly, foods like oatmeal contain more sugar than the doughnut. (The item in question is McDonald’s Fruit and Maple Oatmeal.) The video also offers some alternatives to consider.
It’s a good idea to check the sugar content of your favorite foods. In many cases, there are less sugary substitutes available.
When you come for your dental exams, Dr. Nelson is happy to discuss nutrition with you. Keep up with your daily brushing and flossing to mitigate the effects of sugary foods. If you are cavity prone, you may want to consider fluoride treatments and/or dental sealants.
